Meditation is definitely on of the biggest buzzwords these days particularly when it comes to health and well-being. Most people would agree that it sounds like a worthwhile endeavor. In my opinion, the two biggest deterrents to practicing meditation are time and perspective, which actually go hand in hand. Our cultural values are counter to the idea of taking charge of our own health and well-being much less by setting aside time to sit in silence for any appreciable length of time. We are indoctrinated to believe that to do and produce is the only way to have value. Is this true? Are we creating a better society, or is our society more stressed and unhealthy than it ever has been? From the looks of the health crisis in this country, I think we would all agree that we need a new way to conduct our lives where we are more in charge, calmer and healthier, and believe it or not, more productive!
How do you start? Group classes are a good way to foster consistency and accountability. They provide a forum of support to learn and grow in as well as a template to begin a home practice from.

The meditation class we offer, Stillness on Saturdays, explores many different types of meditations from all kinds of spiritual traditions, religious as well as non-secular. This gives the student a chance to choose which type would be best suited for a personal practice. In the month of June, mindfulness meditation is being taught. Mindfulness meditation has ancient roots in the Buddhist tradition and is known as vipassana. Over the last 30 years, Jon Kabat-Zinn has made this popular worldwide through his work in the medical setting at The University of Massachusetts Medical Center. The elements found in this type of meditation support the beginner yet can serve a practitioner for a lifetime.
This class is always a donation class. This means that you can donate, or not, any amount you wish. Each month, the participants help to choose the charity of the month. 75% of the proceeds go to the charity. This month the charity is Paws for Veterans, rescuing dogs to rescue heroes. This organization rescues, trains and provides service dogs for veterans suffering from combat injuries. The support provided is for a lifetime if needed.
